#DoGoodLive: Shaping Future Ready Schools
“Outside, students feel free to explore at their own pace."
In our most recent episode of #DoGoodLive, we had the honor of spotlighting Ms. Boyd, Senior High Assistant Principal at Metro School, a unique public school within the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School District.
With warmth, wisdom, and a clear vision for the future, Ms. Boyd shared how her team is reimagining what’s possible for students by using outdoor learning as a catalyst for growth, joy, and connection.
Learning Without Limits
At Metro School, learning looks a little different. Ms. Boyd spoke about how outdoor learning empowers students with cognitive disabilities to engage in meaningful, hands-on learning that supports their individual needs and sparks curiosity.
“Outside, students feel free to explore at their own pace,” she shared. “It opens up opportunities for movement, sensory experiences, and confidence-building that can be hard to replicate in a traditional classroom.”
Equity at the Heart
Equity isn’t just a talking point for Ms. Boyd, it’s a daily practice. She described how transforming Metro’s outdoor spaces into learning environments helps ensure that every student, regardless of ability, has the ability to explore, engage, and develop essential life skills.
“Most of our students are non-speaking or have limited verbal communication, so we have to be really intentional about how we teach," she said. “We want to make sure every student can engage in a way that feels meaningful to them.”
Leading with Compassion
Ms. Boyd also touched on what it means to lead and listen with intention. She shared how her role as a school leader is about amplifying teacher voices, fostering collaboration, and encouraging new approaches that support the whole child.
“We believe in our students’ potential,” she said. “And when we create environments that reflect that belief, we see incredible growth.”
This conversation is a must-watch for educators, leaders, and champions committed to inclusive education, real-world learning, expanding access for all students, and shaping the future of learning through the outdoors. Watch the full episode:
